Nice 10" 4:3 screen, excellent battery life, excellent stereo sound for a tablet, wireless charging dock, regular Android and Linux updates available. I'm aware that there are many later Android/Linux releases for the Touchpad, but all such updates are a bit tricky to install and prone to bugs, missing support for certain hardware components, so better to stick with what's working. Cyanogenmod 11 (Android 4.4.4), the version referred to as "most stable" in the video still has a few quirks, but I can work around them (for example Tasker disconnects/reconnects 5 GHz WiFi every 30 minutes because otherwise it would die). It sits in a wireless-charging Touchstone dock, and the battery is still fine after almost a decade. I'm still using mine on Android 4.4.4, just to run my Home Assistant display panel and some background Tasker tasks for home automation. Good times, good times.ĮDIT: Bell Fibe TV app didn't seem to like operating, so I am giving Android 7.1 at try. Pretty crazy that a $99 tablet (down from $499) from 2011 is still going. In any event it was a fun little Saturday afternoon project. But I can now install the Bell Fibe TV app and use it for a little TV screen in my workshop. I was hoping it might seem peppier, but it doesn't seem to be. Note that 9.0 doesn't include camera or Bluetooth. Most of the way down the thread there is a "Follow up Q & A" which includes a button titled "What Roms do I recommend". There is a link to Android 9.0 install at the top of the thread. So I was doing some electronics spring cleaning and was getting ready to throw out my old $99 HP Touchpad, but I thought I'd google HP Touchpad one last time just for shits and giggles.įound this thread with a fantastic how-to video on how to update it to various newer versions of Android.
